                        4th Grade Enrichment

The Enrichment Program is really the foundation of the PTG, offering classroom experiences and field trips throughout the year that elaborate and enhance the school curriculum.   Enrichment activities for the 4th grade this year include the following:

                        Techsploration
Techsploration  is an in-school  program designed to introduce students in New England to technology, science, and problem solving in a fun and exciting way.  Tom Wahle uses a wide variety of methods - slides, huge props, juggling, blues harmonica, and even balloon tying - to teach technology and science concepts.  In addition to being fun, the activities are highly educational.  They reinforce the school’s curriculum, illustrate how concepts are applied to real life situations, and incorporate state standards.

                        EcoTarium
The EcoTarium is a unique indoor-outdoor museum in Worcester, MA. Set in an urban oasis, the EcoTarium offers a chance to walk through the treetops, take a thrilling multimedia journey through the galaxy at a digital planetarium, meet wildlife, stroll nature trails, ride a narrow-gauge railroad, and get hands-on with family-friendly exhibits. The EcoTarium features three floors of exhibits that make creative use of the museum's natural history collection and living wildlife to teach us about our planet's history and about New England environments of today.

                        Freedom Train
The fourth graders will attend this highly acclaimed Theatreworks USA musical, Freedom Train at Mechanics Hall in Worcester, MA. The musical tells the thrilling story of Harriet Tubman, the Moses of her people, in a fascinating series of highly theatrical scenes that use dance, dialogue, and music of the period. Freedom Train is the story of self-sacrifice, dedication and survival, laced with warmth and a sense of humor that celebrates the human spirit – a universal story for all. Theatreworks USA has a distinguished history of not only providing young audiences with their first taste of the performing arts, but also giving young actors, writers, directors, and designers an early opportunity to work in this field.

Museum of Science Cryogenics: Heat and Temperature
Professional Museum of Science educators bring an interactive program to GES which illustrates core ideas about heat energy and transfer. Through live demonstrations, students learn the differences between the three main mechanisms of heat transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation. Students explore the definitions of heat and temperature, discover that all elements have specific melting and boiling points, show that light or even water can incinerate a piece of paper, and learn ways to differentiate between two cryogenics liquids. The Museum of Science traveling programs are designed to support learning goals of the Massachusetts standards.

                        Immigration Day
On Immigration Day, the 4th Grade students explore the history of immigration in this country as well as their own histories and ancestries.  Each student will receive a passport and move through an Ellis Island simulation, a reading station where the students can enjoy stories from around the globe, a mapping station where students can see the histories of everyone in their grade, a game room where they can play games from across the world and a craft station where they can design their own coat of arms. The students also enjoy a visit from storytellers Tim Jennings and Leanne Ponder, who actively engage the students in some folktales. This day complements the 4th grade curriculum and has become an enrichment program that the students really look forward to.
